For the first time ever

Micro-plastics have been found in human blood.


       According to the Guardian report,Dutch scientists analyzed blood samples from 22 anonymous donors. Quantifiable micro-plastics were detected in the blood of 17 people(77%), with an average concentration of micro-plastics particles in the blood as high as 1.6 micro-grams per milliliter. The most common plastics are polyethylene terephthalate(PET),polystyrene(PS), polyethylene(PE),polypropylene(PP) and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA). It is believed to be the first time micro-plastics have been found in human blood. The study was published in Environment International (IF=9.621), the top journal in the field of environmental science, in the early morning of March 25th, Beijing time.

      50% of the subjects contained PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which was commonly found in beverage bottles such as cola juice, mineral water, and some medicine bottles.Polystyrene(PS), found in food packaging such as foam lunch boxes, was found in 36% of the subjects. The rest of the subjects had polyethylene(PE),the main ingredient in plastic bags.


How do micro-plastics get into the body?


By drinking,breathing,eating,etc


     So how do micro-plastics get into body? A paper in the journal Science reports that micro-plastics can enter the body through inhalation and ingestion. Newcastle University in the UK finds from 33 studies that water is the biggest route for the penetration of micro-plastics in the human body. Breathing is also one of the ways plastics enters the body, researchers found in 16 analyses of indoor and outdoor air quality. In addition, research published by the European Society of Gastroenterology in 2018 confirmed that the human diet is also a way for micro-plastics to penetrate the body.


How big is the micro-plastics crisis?

It can even be inherited.


Researcher believed that micro-plastics in the human body act slowly like a frog boiled in warm water , causing damage to the lymphatic system, digestive system and reproductive system.



      A recent study found that micro-plastics can attach to the outer membrane of red blood cells and potentially limit their ability to deliver oxygen. Scientists found in pregnant mice that micro-plastics can quickly pass through the lungs to the fetus’s heart,brain and other organs. Research has shown that micro-plastics can have toxic effects on cells and change their shape. Studies in mice have shown that they may penetrate the blood-brain barrier and cause high cholesterol and heart disease.



         In addition, Italian researchers found micro-plastics in the human placenta for the first time at the end of 2020, and also found micro-plastics in the mother, placenta and amniotic membrane. If a woman with micro-plastics particles becomes pregnant, the fetus is more likely to have micro-plastics particles in its body, and the number of micro-plastics particles in the fetus is 10-20 times higher than the mother’s!
